“SmartStone™” is a satirical painting set in a not-so-distant future — where even death has been swallowed by consumer culture.
In this world, cemeteries have become corporate theme parks. Gravestones are now SmartStones™ — luxury coffins equipped with flat screens, vending machines, and algorithm-powered AI so real you can still “talk” to your loved ones.
This SmartStone belongs to Paul. He died in a scuba diving accident when his Apple Watch distracted him with a viral TikTok notification. He came up too fast.
Paul had everything: money, followers, status, luxury. His SmartStone reflects the life he lived — a widescreen memorial streaming highlights, his favorite sneakers, champagne on tap, a Rolex, and even his girlfriend’s Louis bag. His digital afterlife? Curated, interactive, and monetized.
The company behind it all? EverRest™ — a tech giant spun out of NVIDIA, which in this world has become the most powerful country on Earth.
But under the humor lies a serious critique:
How far will capitalism go before we realize it’s taken everything — even death — and turned it into another subscription model?
